Experience the natural beauty of northern Virginia, or “NoVa” as the locals call it, by hitting the trails. Read on to learn about some of our favorite spots to explore.
1. Algonkian Regional Park
This 838-acre recreational hub is located at 47001 Fairway Drive and is nestled against the serene Potomac River. You and your dog can spend hours hiking the natural surface and paved hiking trails at no cost. To access one of our favorite hikes, when you arrive, you will want to pass the Volcano Island Waterpark and head to the west end to locate the trail kiosk.
Harness up your dog and cross over the wooden footbridge, then choose a trail. Follow the white-marked trees for the White Trail or the blue-marked trees for the Potomac National Heritage Trail, which is part of a 700+ mile network.
2. Seneca Regional Park
Adjacent to the Algonkian Regional Park, this stretch of pristine wilderness is located at 101 Seneca Road, which dead ends at the parking lot. The winding trails will lead you and your dog to the river, and you can follow the same route explored by George Washington.
Locals consider this park a hidden gem that is fun to explore in all seasons. Best of all, you and your furry bestie can trek this 4.5-mile loop at no cost!
3. Frying Pan Farm Park
For a truly unique experience, bring your leashed dog to this working farm that preserves early 20th-century farm life. At the farm, you will encounter numerous animals. Located at 2709 West Ox Road, you can explore the grounds for free unless there are special events. On the north side of the park, there is Frying Pan Branch, which has wooded hiking trails near a creek. You can grab maps for the hiking trails at the museum.
